Rilke in Song: The Dark Hours
The songs on this recording were composed after a decade of reading Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows' translation of Rilke's Book of Hours. They are all taken from the Book of a Monastic Life. The poems follow a path into the soul of darkness, an exploration of the deeper spiritual meanings found in dark times, places, and passages. Each song emerged quite differently in terms of genre, my influences range from acoustic folk, to classical, to latin, to jazz, to rock and even hip hop, with some retro U2. Still the cycle sings itself together as a whole, and the fantastic musicianship of the members of rEvolve echoes deep. Haunting violin from Lydia Violet, Bay Area musician, fill out the sonic body of these works and take this rEvolve project into a new musical realm.
