Billy Broke Locks
In 1737, the colonists of Massachusetts became embroiled in a currency dispute with the Crown.
England wanted the colonists to convert to a paper note called the “new Tenor”.
The Salem Mint Master at the time, John Webb, refused to convert.
Instead, he stuck with the “old Tenor”. He was arrested and jailed for his
disobedience. John’s supporters, one of whom was a huge Scotsman nick-named Billy,
broke him out and helped him escape. Then they went dancing. Some things
never change!
